athena004 :
I am looking to travel to China to visit a friend during the first or second week of August. He lives in Hong Kong, so my trip would be based out of there. I’ll be there for approximately 10 days.
I definitely want to visit Beijing, but doing so means I can probably only afford to fly to one other city. Where should I go?
Lastly, any recommendations on inexpensive but non-hostel hotels? Any weather issues or travel advice for August? I have been to Asia before, but it was almost a decade ago. Thanks.

I can’t recommend any hotels, or citites to go to but hopefully you do plan to go and see the Great Wall of China and hike it, etc..
I hear Hong Kong is the city to see, it heard it has its new and its old still. Hope you fun, even if it is a communist country.
I have been to china several times. I have found one website pretty helpful. you can get into direct contact with some tour guides. I like the town of Yangshuo in Guangxi province very beautiful and very cheap. Found it on that site. In Yunan province I liked the city of Dali.
good luck
