hi -
l’m travelling to beijing in a few months during feb-march and i’ll be there for 2 months.
l’m 18, going alone to relax after year 12. i am staying at a beijing apartment, it’s what i wanted – a nice, normal apartment with a balcony. l wanted to go so that i could relax and re-focus before i being my university back in adelaide.
l didn’t want to go with my friends, i can speak a bit of chinese. what should i do with all my time? i really think i will spend a week just by myself relaxing, looking around, i might travel to shanghai for a few nights and stay at a hotel.
what are some things i can do in beijing to get a good sense of the true culture? how friendly are the locals – do many speak english?
my hobbies are reading, watching movies, and i smoke – so i have a balcony apartment. how many people smoke in china?
will it be easy for me to make local friends?

try to learn chinese, its very good language
For english bookstores, you should go to the Wangfujuer bookstore. Its not only one of the only english bookstores in the city but also and upscale shopping district with street food at night. Rent a bike and bike around from place to place. Its a great way to see how the everyday people live. Since your going to be there in Feb., the new years street shopping are out. There usually in a park so you get too see views of the park as well as shop for cheap things. Try going to day before the holiday starts to miss the crowds.
